Riven: The Sequel to Myst

Riven is the sequel to the highly successful and critically acclaimed adventure game, Myst. Developed by Cyan Worlds, Riven was released in 1997 and continues the narrative established in Myst. Just like its predecessor, Riven is a first-person point-and-click adventure game with a focus on exploration and puzzle-solving.
The plot revolves around Atrus, a character introduced in Myst, and his efforts to rescue his wife Catherine from Gehn, his father, who is a power-hungry and manipulative figure. The player must navigate through various Ages (worlds) and uncover the secrets of Riven to ultimately confront Gehn.

Riven: The Sequel to Myst review

Computer Games Magazine (1997): "Riven, the sequel to Myst, is likely to be harshly criticized by those same people, and beloved by all of the people that made Myst such a success. Once again it often feels like a screen saver, with static screen after static screen, and an attempt at a Quicktime VR- or Zork Nemesis-style 360 degree panning environment is almost laughable. It has the same simplistic interface, lack of inventory and no meaningful interaction with the natives things that frustrate long-time adventure gamers. However, Riven sucks you into its world even more effectively than Myst ever did, fleshing it out with more story, better integrated puzzles and a visual splendor that must be experienced to believe."

Retro gamer collector's corner:

Whereas the music to Myst was, at first, only available by mail-order from Cyan, Virgin Records had bought the rights to release it initially, prompting Miller to make sure that it could stand alone in CD form. The compact disc was released on February 24, 1998, with 54 minutes of music.
