Shadow of the Comet

Shadow of the Comet is a 1993 adventure game steeped in cosmic horror, mystery, and the unsettling fiction of H. P. Lovecraft. Players follow journalist John Parker as he investigates strange events in the isolated town of Illsmouth, gradually uncovering secrets that would probably have been healthier left undiscovered. Exploration, conversations, inventory puzzles, and careful observation drive the adventure, while the atmosphere steadily becomes darker and more disturbing. The game does an excellent job of making ordinary locations feel suspicious, as if every friendly-looking resident might know considerably more than they are willing to admit. Its story rewards patience and curiosity, although some puzzles can be rather unforgiving. Shadow of the Comet remains memorable because it understands that horror does not always need monsters jumping at the screen. Sometimes a quiet conversation, a strange photograph, or an oddly deserted street is enough to make you wish you had stayed home.
