Mechwarrior 2: Mercenaries

MechWarrior 2: Mercenaries is a standalone expansion to MechWarrior 2: 31st Century Combat, released in 1996 by Activision. Part of the larger BattleTech universe, the game puts players in control of a customizable BattleMech as they assume the role of a freelance mercenary pilot in the turbulent 31st century. MechWarrior 2: Mercenaries introduces a more open-ended, non-linear gameplay experience: players can choose which missions to take on. As players complete missions for different factions, they can shape the reputation of their mercenary group, which affects mission availability and relationships with various factions.

Mechwarrior 2: Mercenaries review

PC Powerplay 7 (1996): "With the excellent mission variance that goes from destroying floors out of a buildig to hunting down evil pirate leaders, MW2 Mercenaries takes the genre auto of the sterile structure of the clans and into a more fluid world where profit replaces honour. The graphics are enhanced, the gameplay is faster and more dynamic and the net play fully incorporated. MW2 fans, of which there are many, will be very pleased with the upgrades and those new to the MW2 universe will enhoy a well paced game with superb graphics and cut-scenes. Just make sure you have a really good joystick."

Mechwarrior was the grand-daddy of first person mech sims, and MW2 was long without equal in its class. MW Mercenaries was the final instalment and what a last hurrah. For those that liked the smorgasboard of mission choices of the original, rather than the limited mission options of story driven Mechwarrior 2, this is your go-to game. It has a lot more mechs and slightly upgraded engine compared to MW2, but the extra dimension of salvage as well as picking sides makes playing the Merc better than ever!
