Realms of Arkania 1: Blade of destiny

Blade of Destiny is old-school RPGing at its most unapologetic. Based on the German tabletop system Das Schwarze Auge, it throws you into a world where character creation alone feels like an exam. Once you're past that hurdle, the game reveals a sprawling, wonderfully grounded fantasy setting full of practical concerns: food, weather, diseases, and the occasional brigand who skipped negotiations entirely. The first-person exploration and tactical combat reward careful planning, while the story nudges you toward heroic deeds without hand-holding. It’s demanding, but once it gets its hooks in, it’s hard to resist.

Attic Entertainment did a splendid job transferring the game system from its p&p origins to the computer. That however means that the Northland trilogy features several game mechanics that are rather unique and obscure to "normal" players. The developers often stated that these games were made by fans for fans. Being familiar with the p&p ruleset helps tremendously but is by no means required to enjoy the games.

Unfortunately, Sir-Tech did a lackluster job with the English localisation and introduced many bugs that did not exist in the German original. If possible you should choose the German CD-ROM relase over the English one.

Classic example of a failed conversion from a pen and paper system to a computer game. Realms of Arkania is pretty and it presents well, but it's full of mechanics that should never have been put in a computer game. It has some great concepts, it looks great, making chracters is fun...but the final delivery is poor and the game part of the game kind of fails.
