Pirates! Gold is an open world game designed by Paul Murphy, developed and released by MicroProse Software in 1993 for DOS, Windows 3.x, Mac and also Sega Genesis and Amiga CD32. Pirates! Gold is a remake of the game Pirates, created by Sid Meier in 1987. Pirates! Gold gameplay is a unique mix of action, strategy, pirate life simulation, adventure and features battles at sea, trading, sword fighting and even quests (unusual for a game like this, at the time).

Tips for Playing Pirates! Gold

Choose the Right Ship:
Fast ships like sloops are great for chasing and escaping but have limited cargo and firepower. Heavily armed ships like frigates are powerful but slower. Try to maintain a balanced fleet for versatility.

Make Allies Wisely:
Align with nations that control towns near your preferred hunting grounds. This gives you safe harbors to repair and resupply.

Target Weak Enemies:
Start by attacking small merchant vessels or poorly defended towns to build your resources and experience.

Learn the Sword Fighting Mechanics:
Practice timing for your attacks and blocks. Anticipate your opponent's moves to counter effectively.

Use Wind to Your Advantage:
In naval combat, maneuver with the wind to gain the upper hand. Avoid being "caught in irons" (stuck against the wind).

Manage Crew Morale:
Distribute loot regularly to keep your crew happy.
Avoid long periods without plunder or victories, as this will lower morale.

Watch for Hidden Treasures:
Pay attention to maps, rumors, and clues about hidden treasures. Digging up a legendary treasure can massively boost your wealth.

Balance Wealth and Fame:
While hoarding gold is tempting, remember that building fame (by completing missions and gaining titles) leads to better rewards and retirement outcomes.
