Game company profile: Distinctive Software
Distinctive Software Inc. (DSI) was a Canadian video game development company founded in 1982 in Burnaby, British Columbia, by Don Mattrick and Jeff Sember. DSI gained recognition for creating popular racing games like Stunts, Test Drive, and The Duel: Test Drive II, which offered players realistic driving experiences. DSI primarily developed games for PCs and early gaming consoles, focusing on accurate vehicle dynamics and realistic experiences. This approach was less common at the time, making their games stand out.
In 1991, Electronic Arts (EA) acquired DSI, integrating it as EA Canada. This acquisition was part of EA's strategy to bolster its sports game portfolio and expand its presence in Canada, and it ultimately became one of EA's key development studios. DSI's technology and expertise in racing simulations were instrumental in helping EA develop new franchises, including Need for Speed, one of the most successful racing series in gaming history.
After becoming EA Canada, the studio continued to grow and produce best-selling games, eventually developing franchises beyond racing, such as EA's FIFA and NHL series.
