Game company profile: Renegade Software
Renegade Software was a British video game publisher active in the early 1990s. It was founded in 1991 as a spin-off of The Bitmap Brothers, one of the most iconic game development studios of the era. The goal of Renegade Software was to serve as a publishing label for independent developers, allowing them to maintain creative control over their games while benefiting from Renegade’s distribution and marketing.
Renegade Software published several well-known titles, many of which were developed by The Bitmap Brothers or other talented UK-based studios. Renegade Software positioned itself as a “developer-friendly” publisher, which was rare at the time, as many publishers exerted strict control over game development. This approach attracted many talented studios and helped produce some of the most beloved Amiga, Atari ST, and DOS games of the era.
Despite its success, Renegade Software was acquired by Time Warner Interactive in 1995, marking the end of its independent operation.
